England cruise to victory

By Glenn Lavery at Wembley Stadium. Saturday, 28 March 2009.

England

4-0

Slovakia

Heskey 7, Rooney 70, 90+2, Lampard 82

International Match
5.15pm, Saturday 28 March 2009
Wembley Stadium
Live on Setanta Sports

A 4-0 dismissal of Slovakia, courtesy of goals from Emile Heskey, Frank Lampard and a Wayne Rooney brace, proved ideal preparation for England’s forthcoming World Cup Qualifier against Ukraine which will take place on Wednesday night.

He may have been disappointed that his side weren’t able to win by a greater margin, but this result will have warmed Fabio Capello on a chilly March evening, which saw David Beckham set an outfield record of 109 England caps.

England players wear the new home kit for the first time. This ultimately proved a comfortable victory for The Three Lions, who were wearing the new England home kit for the first time. The only downside for Capello was injuries to Heskey, Carlton Cole and Peter Crouch which forced all three men to limp off.

The hosts controlled the opening 45 minutes, producing a number of incisive and penetrative passing moves, one of which led to Heskey’s opener after just seven minutes.

Rooney and Steven Gerrard interchanged well on the edge of the Slovakian area. After a neat one-two, Gerrard turned well, advanced to the by-line and found Heskey at the near post. Under pressure from Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel, the Villa front man did well to bundle the ball past Stefan Senecky in the Slovak goal.

Barely two minutes later, Heskey missed a glorious chance to double England’s lead. Once more finding space on the left flank, Rooney sent in a delicious cross to the far post, but the goalscorer headed over from barely five yards out.

Heskey’s afternoon was brought to an unfortunate conclusion after quarter of an hour when he was replaced by Cole, who himself limped off injured in the first half, to be replaced by Peter Crouch.

The visitors' first chance of the game was a volley from Stanislav Sestak following a good run and cross from Peter Pekarik.

Just before the half hour mark, Aaron Lennon, making his tenth appearance for England, scampered down the right wing and his centre was only half cleared by Skrtel. The ball fell invitingly for Lampard, but his volley was repelled by Senecky.

Lennon was once more involved in England’s next sight at goal. A sliding tackle from Lampard broke to the Tottenham man out wide, allowing him to take advantage of the space ahead. He stole into the box, only to see his cross parried by Senecky, who quickly recovered to palm away Gerrard’s headed rebound.

With England looking good for their one goal advantage, Slovakia reminded them how slender this lead actually was. The Slovakian skipper, Robert Vittak, was presented with a chance to equalise when the England defence engaged in some loose passing across their own area, but Vittak's shot was saved well by David James.

England’s temporary carelessness seemed to spark them into action again. As the half progressed, Lennon’s right flank carried the greater menace and it was from the right that Capello’s charges created their final opportunity of the half, though the Slovak stopper denied Gerrard once more.

David Beckham enters the Wembley pitch for his 109th England cap.Beckham was introduced after the interval for his 109th England appearance, whilst Stewart Downing and Ben Foster were also called upon by Capello.

Beckham’s first contribution was to curl a trademark free-kick into the box, but it zipped past the waiting posse.

Despite controlling proceedings for large portions of the game, England were still unable to give their fans the luxury of a second goal and Slovakian substitute, Erik Jendrisek, almost capitalised. After Glen Johnson had made an overlapping run, Jendrisek was played in on the left, but he shot into the side netting.

On 62 minutes England Captain, John Terry, had a goal ruled out following another Beckham free-kick but the 85,000 fans inside Wembley had to wait just eight minutes for that seemingly elusive second goal.

A cross-field ball from Gareth Barry found its way to Beckham, who calmly set-up an unmarked Rooney on the edge of the six yard box and the Manchester United forward did the rest, nodding beyond Senecky.

With the exception of the odd chance, the visitors offered little in the way of an attacking force and despite the three injuries, Capello will be pleased to have warmed up for the Ukraine Qualifier in such a comfortable manner.

England’s third goal came on 82 minutes. The newly-introduced Michael Carrick fed Lampard, bursting into the Slovakian box. The Chelsea midfielder surged beyond three defenders and found the corner of the net with a cool finish. This was England's 500th goal at Wembley Stadium.

Man of the Match, Rooney, sealed the victory in added time after being found by Lampard.

It’s Ukraine next for England and Capello will no doubt hope for a similar result.

Fabio Capello wary of trip to back of beyond for World Cup match in Kazakhstan
Quote:

It is the longest away trip in European football. Talk about a hangover after a long hard season: England fly to Kazakhstan this week, to the oil-rich Almaty, a city further east than Baghdad. This might be a European qualifier but Almaty is actually 30 miles further from London than New York.

Fabio Capello has described the situation as "terrible" as he faces up to the challenge of motivating a group of players for a World Cup qualifier when they are on a comedown from competing for major domestic honours. The England manager believes one factor might play into his hands: Manchester United's defeat in Rome.

Rio Ferdinand said he wants to "get it out of his system" and that undoubtedly goes for Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney, too. What Capello wants is a response like John Terry's this time last season.A week after missing the decisive penalty in the Champions League final in Moscow, the England captain was inspirational as he scored in England's 2-0 win over the United States at Wembley."Terry is one fighter!" Capello said. "He played very well the game after the final and missing the penalty. I hope for the same reaction from the other players. It's very, very important."

Rooney, particularly disappointing in Rome by his own standards, will be crucial to breaking down inevitably defensive opposition and Capello is confident that his Barcelona blip will not be repeated. "I watched a lot of games when he played very well, the semi-final for example. He lost easy passes in Rome, incredible. He was nervous. He wanted to play different. But it's not a problem for me because he's a very, very good player and he will play very well."

Easier said than done, of course. The players will be airborne for eight hours on the way out to Almaty and could be playing in heat of 30 degrees or higher, with pretty basic facilities. Then, after an equally punishing return flight, they need to get up for foul-happy Andorra at Wembley on the Wednesday. All that at the end of a long, hard season in which the likes of Rooney and Frank Lampard have played over 50 games for club and country.
"Playing at the end of the season is terrible," Capello conceded, "but during the meeting in Zagreb [to organise the group fixtures] they asked me to play in this period, Kazakhstan. And after that Andorra wanted to play here on June 10. We tried to play Andorra in February but they wanted to play in June.

"In Germany there is a mid-season break where play is suspended for one month, then play Sunday-Wednesday, Sunday-Wednesday after that. This is very important. Here at Christmas you have to play. You have to understand the right of the league and the money for the clubs, it is not easy to find a solution.

"They will be tired from the long flight. I know it's a big problem. We have to play far away and I don't know what we will find, the pitch, the stadium. But there are no excuses. We know everything: some of the FA technical staff went there three times to check everything. It's very, very important to win these games and score six points. It is a very big step for South Africa to win these games because three points [after that] and we can be sure we will go to South Africa."

Despite the conditions, winning should be straightforward. Capello is taking a very strong squad to Almaty, with only David James missing from his ideal starting XI. That should mean a start for Robert Green of West Ham. There is only one curiosity in his squad: the inclusion of Gary Neville, a stalwart of the national team in his day but now Manchester United's fourth-choice right back. Capello is making a point about the paucity of his options – and also making it abundantly clear what he thinks of Micah Richards, whom he politely described as "not ready."

The other selection issue concerns Theo Walcott. The Arsenal winger is in the senior party but has also been selected by Stuart Pearce for the European Under-21 championships and will therefore only get just over a week's rest before having to report back for pre-season training with his club.

"Stuart Pearce spoke with the players and the player was happy to play with the Under-21s. I also understand Arsene Wenger because he said he needed to take a holiday. But he did not play during the winter. His holiday was in the winter. He is happy to play. This is the most important thing. You have to speak with Arsene. Some players are not happy to go to Sweden with the Under-21s."

Overstretching Walcott, who has been troubled by injuries in his young career, will not just hurt Arsenal. Having no real rest in the summer before a World Cup season just doesn't make sense and while it is important not to devalue England's efforts in Sweden, surely an England first XI player should have South Africa as his priority. Capello's argument that he is "young" and can handle it is not backed up by his fitness record.

After these qualifiers, Capello will catch one of England's games in Sweden before flying down to Johannesburg for the Confederations Cup, where he will get the chance to inspect some potential base camps. It might feel a long way in Almaty on Saturday, but South Africa is clear on the horizon now.

Full squad: Scott Carson (West Bromwich Albion), Robert Green (West Ham United), Paul Robinson (Blackburn Rovers); Wayne Bridge (Manchester City), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), Joleon Lescott (Everton), Gary Neville (Manchester United), John Terry (Chelsea), Matthew Upson (West Ham United); Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), David Beckham (AC Milan loan from LA Galaxy), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City), Ashley Young (Aston Villa); Carlton Cole (West Ham United), Peter Crouch (Portsmouth), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur), Emile Heskey (Aston Villa), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United).

Cool news ..

England lose Michael Carrick for World Cup qualifiers
Quote:

England have suffered another serious setback with Michael Carrick ruled out of the squad ahead of the forthcoming World Cup qualification matches.

The 27 year-old Manchester United midfielder, who has suffered a foot injury, becomes the seventh player to be forced out of the squad. Manager Fabio Capello has already lost goalkeepers David James and Ben Foster plus Aaron Lennon, Stewart Downing, Phil Jagielka and Jonathan Woodgate.

Capello has called up Aston Villa's James Milner from the Under-21 squad as a replacement for Carrick with England flying out on Wednesday to face Kazakhstan this Saturday, before hosting Andorra four days later.

Carrick's absence is a setback for Capello, who rates him highly.

While neither nation represents the most taxing of opponents, Capello will be anxious to gain maximum points to consolidate England's position at the head of Group Six. Capello, who has been concerned that clubs may put pressure on their players to withdraw, said that six points from the two matches would represent "a big step" towards qualifying for South Africa next year.

The England Under-21 squad, who will be preparing to take part in the European Championship later this month, have also suffered withdrawals. Captain Steven Taylor (Achilles) and Danny Welbeck (knee) have pulled out due to injury.

England, who will call up replacements, will submit a final 23-man squad to Uefa on Monday.

Cool English football teams to represent Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics

London 2012: Sepp Blatter gives green light for England football team

Quote:
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has officially approved the deal for exclusively English football teams to represent Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics.

The four home nations had written to Fifa detailing their agreement for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to take no part in the Olympics but allowing England to represent Team GB.

The deal was presented to Fifa's executive committee meeting in Nassau on Sunday afterwards Blatter said all parties were happy.

It means the way is now completely clear for the British Olympic Association to announce that England will represent Team GB in the men's and women's tournaments.

Blatter said: "I'm happy because I have always said don't make a big story about this.

"You have to bring a Great Britain team for the 2012 Olympics in football, and as they are four associations then take one association to be this team.

"I said this at the very beginning and they did it. I am happy they are happy, the IOC is happy, the organising committee is happy and I hope football is happy."

The Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish FAs feared any involvement could threaten their separate identity in football, but Andy Burnham, secretary of state for culture, media and sport, earlier today condemned their stance as "narrow-minded".

Burnham said on BBC Radio Five Live: "I'm obviously pleased that the four associations have come to an agreement that there can be a Team GB.

"But I think it's very disappointing and actually a bit narrow-minded in some ways that we're just saying young talent from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can't represent that team GB.

"I understand entirely if Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland don't want to be in any way seen to support the principle of team GB... but I think it is very unfair that a young player in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland who would get a call-up to that team, would be threatened with sanctions about joining that team.

"I just feel let's put aside the politics, let's just let sports people make their own decisions and let's put the best British team on home soil."

akhirnya ada Tim GB buat olimpiade ..
walopun hanya diwakili Inggris ..
