Hot on the heels of one legendary track - Silverstone - comes another, and this time it is the turn of the tight and challenging Nurburgring circuit to welcome the Formula One paddock. As the ‘home’ race for world champion Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg, Nick Heidfeld, Timo Glock and Adrian Sutil, the event has special significance for many on the grid. Here the drivers and senior team personnel explain why they can’t wait to head for the mountains… Paul Hembery, Pirelli’s motorsport director “The Nurburgring is one of the most technical circuits we face all year, with a lot of lateral energy going through the tyres, and this makes strategy very important. Although they sit next to each other in our range, there is still a significant difference between the P Zero Yellow soft and the P Zero White medium tyre, as we saw on the last occasion that this combination was used at the Grand Prix of Europe in Valencia. The biggest difference will be the weather, which could be a lot cooler than the conditions we saw in Spain. This means that we expect most of the teams to adopt a two-stop strategy, unless of course it rains, in which case anything is possible. On Friday, the teams will be evaluating a new version of the P Zero Yellow soft tyre. It’s not a big change from the current specification, but it is designed to fit in line with our latest versions of the P Zero Silver hard tyre and P Zero White medium, both of which are a little harder than their original specification in order to reduce degradation. There’s no decision yet on when we might use the new tyre yet, but it will be very interesting to hear all the feedback from the teams.” Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull 2010 Qualifying - 1st, 2010 Race - 3rd “One of the objectives a Formula One driver sets himself, is to win his ‘home race’. Of course, you always give 100%, but at a home race you’re always more motivated, simply because you feel at home. This year we’re back at the Nurburgring, which is one of the better and more modern tracks; I particularly like the stretch from the Ford corner to the 180° long right corner in the valley. The Warsteiner corner is tricky, as is the sharp left before that. The best place to overtake is before the NGK chicane – which is a challenging left-right bend. It’s possible to overtake on the brakes there, because you come out of the previous corner and have to brake down to 100kph. Hitting the brakes later means you can take the bend first, it sounds easy but it’s not because you have to keep away from the kerbs or the car lifts off and you get overtaken again. The Eifel hills are special because the weather can change there as quick as lightning.” Lewis Hamilton, McLaren 2010 Qualifying - 6th, 2010 Race - 4th “Both my previous races at this circuit have been eventful ones. The last time we were here, in 2009, it was such a mixed weekend. We’d been struggling with the car in the early races of the season and the guys back at the factory had been working around the clock to find a solution. From my very first lap, I could feel the difference in the car - it had been transformed. I qualified well, got a really good start thanks to the KERS Hybrid, and I was just about in front at the first corner when I was hit from behind and picked up a puncture, which damaged the car. “In 2007 we had that crazy race with a huge downpour after just a few laps. I’d pitted for rain tyres after getting a puncture, but even with those it was too slippery. I just hit some standing water and went straight off, along with several other drivers in the same place. Race control made the right call to stop the race, and the Nurburgring marshals did an amazing job, in hazardous conditions, to lift me out of the gravel with the crane. Since I’d kept the engine running I was able to get back and take the restart. I was a lap down but I really enjoyed myself in the race, even though I finished just out of the points. “The lesson to draw from all this experience is never to make predictions when you come to the Nurburgring. The current circuit may be less epic than the original 14-mile layout, and certainly a lot safer, but it can still bite you. And the weather can turn in a matter of moments - you can have all the seasons in one afternoon. When that happens, I know I can rely on the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team to react quickly and decisively. Another thing you can be sure of is that there will be a fantastic atmosphere. The local fans know how to party and they always enjoy themselves, whatever the weather!” Michael Schumacher, Mercedes 2010 Qualifying - 11th, 2010 Race - 9th "With two home races in a row, we are fortunate to be given an extra boost as we head to the Nurburgring next week for the German Grand Prix, just two weeks after Silverstone. This season has been a difficult one for performance predictions so far; however I can predict one thing for sure: the extra boost we are receiving will be transformed into extra motivation. We saw some improvements over the Silverstone weekend with our new exhaust system, along with improvements to how we work with the tyres, so we go to the next race weekend with a good feeling added to our fighting spirit. We definitely want to show our home crowds our best level of performance possible. It will be the first time that I race through the corner which is named after me (Turns 8 and 9), and obviously I would like to believe that this is not only making me proud, but also even faster." |

Karthikeyan back in HRT cockpit at Nurby
Jul.20 (GMM) Marginalised driver Narain Karthikeyan is tipped to return to the cockpit of the HRT car this on the Friday of the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. Despite his sponsor Tata’s ongoing backing of the small Spanish team, Indian Karthikeyan was sidelined earlier this month to make way for Daniel Ricciardo’s Silverstone debut. HRT has confirmed that the Red Bull sponsored Australian will once again be racing alongside Vitantonio Liuzzi this weekend in Germany. But according to the auto.cz website, 34-year-old Karthikeyan – who was at Silverstone to entertain HRT’s VIP guests – will be driving Italian Liuzzi’s car during initial Friday practice at the Nurburgring. “The Tata Group is very supportive of what I do and that’s all that matters,” Karthikeyan told Reuters last week following criticism by Force India chief Vijay Mallya. A spokeswoman for HRT told us early on Wednesday: “Narain will continue playing his key role in the team and get in the car when he is required.” “This will be decided in the coming days,” she added. |

FIA preview German GP at Nurburgring
From Race Director Charlie Whiting: “The Nürburgring is always a challenge, usually because of the weather, which is often threatening, whatever time year a grand prix is held here. The DRS zone has been set for the straight before the tight chicane, so we should see some good overtaking. There’s always good action at the first corner: it’s nice and wide, with a variety of lines, which gives drivers an opportunity to pass.” German Grand Prix Fast Facts • Pirelli’s tyre compounds this weekend are prime: medium (white logos) and option: soft (yellow logos), the same selection as for the European GP at Valencia. The medium prime has been chosen on account of the Nürburgring’s wide variety of speeds and corners. The soft tyre is expected to be faster, so is likely to be used in qualifying by all front-runners. • Only three circuits have hosted the German Grand Prix: Hockenheim (32), the Nürburgring (24) and a sole event at Berlin’s Avus circuit in 1959, which was won from pole and with fastest lap by Tony Brooks, in a Ferrari. • Until 2010, Michael Schumacher, 42, was the only German driver to have won the FIA Formula One World Championship. But last year’s success for Sebastian Vettel, 24, takes Germany’s total of drivers’ titles to eight. Schumacher won his first titles in 1994-95 with Benetton, and from 2000-2004 won five consecutive drivers’ world championships with Ferrari. Vettel, the youngest ever world champion, has so far won 16 races and set 22 pole positions. Schumacher’s totals are 91 and 68 respectively. • Five former German GP winners race this weekend: Michael Schumacher (1995, 2002, ’04, ’06); Rubens Barrichello (’00); Fernando Alonso (’05, ’10); Lewis Hamilton (’08); Mark Webber (’09). • German drivers have won a total of 119 Formula One Grands Prix, second in the all-time list behind Britain on 214. Michael Schumacher’s 91 are complemented by victories for Wolfgang von Trips (2); Jochen Mass (1); Heinz-Harald Frentzen (3); Ralf Schumacher (6) and Sebastian Vettel (16). • An eight-year gap separated the last race on the world-famous Nürburgring Nordschleife and the first on the ‘new’ (current) Nürburgring. Niki Lauda’s infamous near-fatal 1976 accident on the 14-mile old circuit curtailed Formula One racing there, but he was present for the inaugural race on the modern track, as one of 20 drivers in identical Mercedes saloons. That race was won by Ayrton Senna, who beat a field of world champions, despite not yet having won his first grand prix. • The outright lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife (in a 20,832m configuration) remains the 6:11.13 set by the late Stefan Bellof in a Porsche 956, in practice for the 1983 Nürburgring 1000km race. • Grands Prix at the ‘new’ Nürburgring have variously been called The German GP (1985, 2009); The European GP (1984, ’95-96, ’99-2007) and The Luxembourg GP (1997-98). • Markus Winkelhock wrote a footnote in F1 history at the Nürburgring, in his sole F1 start, the 2007 European GP. He led the race, as the only driver on wet tyres in wet conditions. He led for six laps, but retired after a re-start with hydraulic failure. |

New soft tyres to be tested at Nurburgring
Jul.19 (PVM) During Friday’s free practice sessions for the German Grand Prix at Nurburgring, F1 teams will have the opportunity to test a new version of the P Zero Yellow soft tyre. Pirelli boss Paul Hembery confirmed, “On Friday, the teams will be evaluating a new version of the P Zero Yellow soft tyre.” The differences should not be huge and are just part of the constantly evolving development of Pirelli’s F1 rubber. Hembery explained, “It’s not a big change from the current specification, but it is designed to fit in line with our latest versions of the P Zero Silver hard tyre and P Zero White medium, both of which are a little harder than their original specification in order to reduce degradation.” He added, “There’s no decision yet on when we might use the new tyre yet, but it will be very interesting to hear all the feedback from the teams.” Pirelli expect that the new soft evolution tyre will feature increased durability and less degradation. |

Williams brings new wings for German Grand Prix
Williams will have new front and rear wings on its cars for the German Grand Prix as it pushes to try and get back into the points after its tough first half of the season. The team has only scored four points so far this year, via ninth places in Monaco and Valencia. Technical director Sam Michael said the upgrades for the Nurburgring would be significant. "We have a new rear wing, front wing and revised engine mapping for the exhaust blowing on over-run that has now been reinstated," he said. Williams showed promise in practice and qualifying at Silverstone, with Pastor Maldonado taking seventh on the grid, before fading badly in the race and coming away with only 13th and 14th places. But Rubens Barrichello was confident that the improvements Williams showed at the start of the weekend were real, and that the Nurburgring could bring better results. "We made a step forward in the qualifying," he told AUTOSPORT. "We would have had two cars in the top 10. The race pace wasn't there but with a little bit of luck, we would have finished in the top 10 today. "I'm still not happy with the whole car balance situation, because it was a lot of new parts for here we've learned a great deal this weekend. So there will be some fine tuning for the next race." |

Silverstone exhaust rules cost McLaren 0.8s McLaren's managing director Jonathan Neale believes his team lost as much as 0.8 seconds to its rivals at the British Grand Prix because of the clampdown on off-throttle exhaust blown diffusers. The one-off rule change clearly hit McLaren hard as both cars struggled to match Red Bull and Ferrari in qualifying and the team took just 12 points away from the weekend. Neale is confident the return to pre-Silverstone regulations will help the it get back on track. "I think that if you look at what happened at Silverstone, then the impact of the interpretation of the engine regulations and rules at that weekend cost us more than both Ferrari and Red Bull," he told the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes phone-in. "That is a matter of face and public record, not opinion. You heard various people form Ferrari quoted that they lost 0.2-0.3s and Red Bull certainly lost more than that and we lost more than both of them. So we probably went backwards relative to them by 0.7s or 0.8s. "We look forward to the return of the Valencia regulations for this weekend. We are not by any means being complacent, either about the progress Ferrari has made or the quality of the car that Red Bull has developed. Our job is to beat both of them and that's what we are going to do." He said McLaren would continue to take risks at the upcoming rounds to try and win races, despite Lewis Hamilton's low-fuel strategy backfiring at Silverstone. "Formula One isn't something that you can play safe, it is about taking risks and you try and get that balance of risks right," Neale added. "Clearly when you're coming from behind - as we are and Ferrari are - you have to work very hard at that. Some risks you take work and some don't. "One of the examples of that was that we consciously put Lewis on a lighter fuel strategy at Silverstone, giving him the ability to fight from P10 [on the grid]. When you're sitting in P10 in a car which has lost over a second of lap time, given the interpretation of the engine regulations for that event, then sitting there just chugging along with everyone else won't get the job done. So we took an aggressive strategy with him. "I think it also means in terms of car development we have to push very hard to close the gap. None of us are going to sit here and make it easy for Red Bull and every one of us wants to win races. So that's what we are going to do." And Neale said McLaren is still targeting the championship, albeit while juggling priorities for next year's car as well. "I think we keep that under constant review, in terms of the priority," he added. "The organisation exists is to win races. We still think there is a chance that we can win races [this season] and we will keep our foot in it. "While it's mathematically possible to win the championship, and it is possible to win the championship, we will fight for it. And even if it isn't that doesn't mean to say we are not going to try and win races. "Winning races is good for us, it's good for our drivers, it's what we are about. But yes, we will constantly keep that balance between how much of our priority is on this year and how much is on next year and we keep that under constant review, but at the moment it's business as usual." |

Single DRS zone again at the Nürburgring
Drivers will only be able to use DRS once per lap during the German Grand Prix. But they will be able to deploy it heading towards one of the prime overtaking spots on the track – the Veedol chicane. The FIA has confirmed the DRS detection zone will be on the approach to the Kumho-Kurve (turn ten). Drivers will then be able to activate their rear wings shortly after the exit of the Bit-Kurve (turn 11). They will then be able to keep them open all the way up to the braking zone for the chicane. Here’s a diagram showing the positioning of the zone: |
