Information Study Pilot In New Zealand ( IAANZ )

Welcome to the International Aviation Academy of New Zealand

Located at Christchurch International Airport in a stand-out, modern complex is the International Aviation Academy of New Zealand (IAANZ), the home to around 100 commercial pilot and flight instructor trainees per year.

With a fleet of 35 aircraft and one the most experienced instructing teams in Australasia, the IAANZ has long been the ‘trainer of choice’ for those pilots heading towards an airline career.

As a preferred training partner in Air New Zealand’s Aviation Institute, the IAANZ’s training programmes have been designed to deliver ‘airline ready’ pilots who are well matched to the changing demands of the airline industry.

The advantages of training at an International airport are huge, and allow trainee pilots to develop skills in a truly professional airline environment.

About Us

The International Aviation Academy of New Zealand (IAANZ) is the Professional flight training division of New Zealand's largest Aero Club, the Canterbury Aero Club (established 1928.)

The International Aviation Academy of New Zealand holds New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) and the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (NZ CAA) Part 141 approval for flight training.

The Academy is unique in that it operates from a large international airport, with full instrument approach aids. The experience gained in this airline environment gives our graduates a significant advantage when pursuing an aviation career.

Additionally our own satellite airfield at West Melton is clear of busy airspace, and provides an ideal alternative, particularly for students during early stages of training.

Our Airfields
Christchurch International Airport is the second largest airport in New Zealand and has all IFR approach/departure aids. Students at the IAANZ have a unique opportunity to train in an airline environment and be exposed to airline influences. Air New Zealand's maintenance facilities, and Airways NZ's Air traffic Centre, which provides air traffic control for the whole of New Zealand, are both located in Christchurch, the aviation capital of New Zealand.

But the Academy's students have the best of both worlds.

Our West Melton airfield, just six minutes flying from Christchurch, is reserved for the exclusive use of the Academy and the Canterbury Aero Club, providing a more relaxed area for training, away from the busy commercial airport when necessary.

We have three low flying and three general training areas located in close proximity and our location close to the Southern Alps provides the ideal environment for total pilot training.

Our Ground Facilities
The Academy's purpose built facilities are world class.
Included in our facilities are:

  • > Nine pilot briefing rooms to ensure privacy during instructor briefing and de-briefing of students.
    > A large flight planning area for completing online loading and flight planning information.
    > Three large lecture rooms for CPL, IFR and ATPL theory courses.
    > Each is designed and built with maximum sound proofing, data projection, full air conditioning and audio visual systems.
    > Two large hangars to ensure every one of our 38 aircraft is hangared at the end of each day.
    > Dedicated student areas to study for exams and flight tests or socialise when time allows.
