ABSTRACT
The plan of mining and processing of iron sand carried out by PT. Jogja Magasa Mining (PT. JMM) to produce
pig iron in the Kulon Progo Regency-DIY, is rejected by some farmer communities that have used the land due
to the environmental and socio-economic issues. The area of the work-contract of the company, including PT.
Krakatau Steel (PT. KS) and Indo Mines Ltd. is located in the Pakualaman land along 22 km of the Kulon Progo
coast of the Districts of Temon, Wates, Panjatan and Galur.
The iron sand deposit is 33.6 million tons. The production is planned to be 500,000 tons/year, whilst the age
of the mining is assumed 25 years. The mining will apply dry mining method; and the process of extraction
will use autokumpu technology as applied in the New Zealand Steel. Reclamation will be conducted in a 200
m long toward inland by making an artificial dune with plants of cemara udang. Nowadays, the company
activity is reaching the stages of feasibility study and environmental impact study assisted by Gajah Mada
University.
According to the analyses, the issues are caused by the lack of socialisation and coordination between the
sectors of agriculture and mining. Procedurally, all the stages are in accordance with the national prevailing
regulations and the international mining practices. According to the Agency for Regional Development Planning
of the regency, the mining activity is in a line with the spatial use of the south coastline. Economically,
some benefits that will be obtained by the regional government and the community consist of wide job
opportunities from the mining operation, processing, supporting industries; increase of the regional revenue,
improvement of the community prosperity around the project through the community empowerment program,
increase the national steel industry (PT. KS), and it will be the sole pig iron industry in the Asean region.
