Carrefour sorry for customer losses
2011-01-28 Retail giant Carrefour has issued an official apology for overcharging consumers with false pricing. The statement came shortly after the National Development and Reform Commission said on Wednesday that it found deceptive practices during a countrywide inspection of selected supermarket chains. The spokesman for the French mega-retailer said in a statement that Carrefour sincerely apologizes for causing losses to its customers, and promises to refund 5 times the difference. He added that the company will establish an internal group to enhance control measures, cooperate with local price inspection and supervisory bodies, and involve them in providing special training for related staff and managers. China National Radio first discovered the inconsistencies at several Carrefour chain stores. The National Development and Reform Commission then carried out an investigation. The probe is part of the government's effort to curb inflation as Spring Festival nears. Regulators randomly selected 30 to 40 items, comparing their label and sales prices, and found there were always three or four items boasting discrepancies at chain stores in Shanghai, Changchun, Harbin, Wuhan, and Changsha. The evidence of cheating includes faking original prices during sales events, cutting the prices shown on tags while charging higher price through cash register, and misleading customers with prices typed in different sizes. The commission ordered local authorities to fine the supermarket five times the overcharged amount, or up to 500,000 yuan, if the amount can't be calculated. It also urged chain stores around the nation to check for pricing errors, and return any undue gains to customers. |

Wal-Mart apologizes to customers for price cheating
2011-01-28 Customers wait at the customer service desk at a Wal-Mart Store in Beijing, capital of China, Jan. 27, 2011. Some Carrefour and Wal-Mart stores in China will be fined up to 500,000 yuan (75,987 U.S. dollars) for cheating customers, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's economic planner and price regulator, said Wednesday. Wal-Mart (China) late Thursday apologized to customers after being blacklisted by Chinese authorities for cheating on prices. The Wal-Mart (China) Investment Co., Ltd. expressed "sincere apology" to affected customers in a written interview with Xinhua. Further, the company has been cooperating with authorities' investigation into the cheating. It has also launched self-examinations in stores nationwide. As the Spring Festival approaches, the company will strengthen its price monitoring, the company said. The company, which entered China in 1996 and has opened 189 stores in 101 cities across the country, promised to continue the self-examination regularly. Its 700 price inspectors perform millions of examinations weekly. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's top economic planner and price regulator, said Wednesday that some Carrefour and Wal-Mart stores in China are involved in deceptive pricing practices. The NDRC ordered local pricing authorities to urge involved stores to correct wrongdoing, and pay fines five times the illegal income. Their ill-gotten money will be confiscated and those that cannot calculate their illegal income will pay a fine of up to 500,000 yuan.(75,987 U.S. dollars). Carrefour "sincerely apologies" and offered to refund customers five times the difference between the price charged and that on the label, China Daily said, citing a statement from the company late Wednesday. An investigation into the price cheating had been launched in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, as it continues in Shanghai. One case was found in the Carrefour store in Tianheyuan Village in the city. A kind of rubber gloves was sold for 0.4 yuan (about 0.06 U.S. dollars) higher than the price on the label here. |

French retailer Carrefour has apologised Thursday night after some of its stores in China were caught overcharging customers for products. Carrefour also offered to refund customers five times the difference between the price charged and that on the label Carrefour China promised customers Saturday that it will always refund five times the difference between the advertised price and the one charged at the register, after it was blacklisted by Chinese authorities for deceptive pricing. Chen Bo, spokesperson with Carrefour China, apologized to Chinese customers in an exclusive interview with Xinhua. Chen said the company has started to work on the pricing issue. Three Carrefour stores in Shanghai fined for overcharging
2011-01-29 Three Carrefour stores were fined 500,000 yuan (75,988 U.S. dollars) each on Saturday for overcharging customers in east China's metropolitan Shanghai, said municipal price regulators. The fine is the highest for such wrongdoing, with the tickets being issued Saturday morning. The three stores were also ordered to correct their illegal pricing and refund overcharged customers, said the regulators. A hearing will be held to decide the final amount of the fine. Carrefour representatives will be able to respond to the charges at the hearing, according to regulators. China's price regulator announced last week that it had found several retailers cheating customers, which included 11 of Carrefour's China stores. Carrefour China promised customers Saturday that it would provide refunds of five times the difference between advertised prices and incorrect prices charged at registers, after it was blacklisted by Chinese authorities due to deceptive pricing. Chen Bo, spokesperson with Carrefour China, apologized to Chinese customers during an exclusive interview with Xinhua. Chen said the company has started to work on this pricing issue. Carrefour China has established both short-term and long-term measures to resolve the issue, Chen added. "We will have our special control group conduct internal price inspections, with wide coverage and high frequency," Chen said. Chen said the refund policy would be permanently implemented at Carrefour's 182 outlets in China, with non-implementation of the policy being regarded as a violation of company rules. The National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner, also urged authorities to step up price checks ahead of the Spring Festival, which falls on Feb. 3 this year. The Spring Festival holiday is usually the busiest shopping season, as the public makes large purchases of food and gifts for families and friends. |
