China's Loongson Processor Effort Wed 30th Dec 2009 21:22 UTC What laptop does Richard Stallman use? A Dell, HP, maybe even an Apple? No - RMS uses a rather odd laptop, a netbook powered by the Chinese Loongson processor: the Yeeloong, a completely Free laptop. From BIOS to operating system, this machine is completely open source. Wired is running a very interesting article on the Loongson processor effort. China, with its massive population, is a very interesting market for computer companies. Only 25% of China's population has access to the internet, so it's a massive growth market. The Chinese themselves realised this too, and in order to not be dependant on foreign powers, they decided to develop their own processor. This would become the Loongson, currently in its second generation. The third generation, which will sport 4 cores and later 8 cores, will be released in 2010. Where it gets really interesting, however, is when you look at the software these Loongson chips are running. Since it's a MIPS chip, it can't run Windows In other words, one of the biggest growth markets in the computing world might be conquered not by Intel and AMD's x86 running Windows, but by a 64bits MIPS chip running open source operating systems like Linux and the BSDs. The key here, as Wired notes, is that Loongson-based devices will be much cheaper for Chinese buyers than Western x86 machines. Of course, the Loongson chip still has a long way to go before it can compete performance wise with Western products, but progress is being made, and China is determined. "The country is incredibly motivated for the project to succeed - it has become a cornerstone of the National High-Tech R&D Program embarked upon in 1986," Wired writes, "And we know that the Chinese are very good at leveraging economies of scale." Combine all this with the fact that the third generation Loongson chip will include specific instructions to speed up x86-to-MIPS dynamic binary translation, and you can see that the Chinese are really taking this seriously. Which is good news for all of us. x86 Needs competition. |

China's Loongson Processor Could Power First Natural-Born Chinese Supercomputer 01.19.2010 at 1:30 pm The Loongson "Godson 2-C" An earlier generation of the Loongson – also known as "Dragon Core" or "Godson" – used in some netbooks and PCs. The next-gen Loongson 3 should be able to power China's first home-grown supercomputer. Konstantin Lanzet As technological tensions run high between the U.S. and China these days (see Google's recent dust-up with the party, etc.), the People’s Republic has unveiled more details on its quest to phase U.S.-made processors from its microchip diet. China’s next supercomputer – a Linux-running machine known as the Dawning 6000 – will run purely on Chinese processors, possibly before the end of this year. China has been developing its own CPUs at the state-run Institute of Computing Technology (ICT) for several years, but iterations of its chip – known as Loongson or “Dragon Core” – have been incapable of breaking into the elite ranks of supercomputing. China’s last supercomputer, the Dawning 5000a, was intended to run on Loongson processors, but was eventually constructed around AMD processors when the ICT couldn’t deliver a powerful enough chip quickly enough. The Loongson 3, under development since 2001, should change all this if the ICT can deliver on its promise. Based on the MIPS architecture, the chips theoretically can be strung in 16-core clusters to perform at extremely high speeds, possibly hitting the petaflop performance mark with just 782 16-core chips. That’s one quadrillion operations per second, for those of you keeping score. Right now, of course, this is all on paper (well, a quad-core chip is in prototype, but the proposed 16-core bad boy is still under development). But authorities in the supercomputing field seem to agree that the chips, running in clusters, can hit the performance marks necessary to create a top-tier supercomputer. This isn’t the first time the Chinese have promised a home-grown high-performance supercomputer, but for the first time it looks like they are going to deliver. |

China: A New Processor for a New Market May/June 2010 This netbook from Lemote, based in *Changshu City, China, uses a *900-megahertz Loongson chip and runs *the Linux operating system. Credit: Lemote China represents a huge, and still largely untapped, market for computer makers: in a country of 1.3 billion people, only 40 million computers were bought in 2008, when the 300 million people living in the United States bought 66 million. As Chinese incomes rise and computer ownership grows, chip makers that establish themselves now will reap vast profits and dominate the market for years. Currently, China depends on Intel, ARM, and other Western companies for the CPUs that power its digital infrastructure, but the Chinese government is determined that a homegrown alternative will share in the spoils. China's ambitions hang on a state-*sponsored project, started in 2001 at the Institute of Computing Technology in Beijing, aimed at developing a family of indigenous processors that can be used in everything from cheap netbooks to supercomputers. To save costs, the chips are made using older silicon technologies and are based on an architecture invented in 1981 and owned by MIPS Technologies, based in Sunnyvale, CA. China chose to license an existing architecture because creating a new one would have meant re*inventing the extensive software libraries that programmers need to create applications, not to mention educating the programmers themselves. The Chinese have surrounded the basic MIPS design with their own subsystems, adding instructions in recent versions so that the chips can run software written for the x86 processors that Intel and AMD make for personal computers. The chips are commercially manufactured outside China by Geneva-based STMicroelectronics (see "Companies to Watch") under the trade name Loongson. They already appear in cheap netbooks and desktop PCs. If China succeeds in making Loongson chips an alternative to Intel- and AMD-based systems in its emerging market, the implications could be felt throughout the developing world, with its billions of potential customers, for decades to come. |

Karena itu tidak mengherankan jika pihak MIT sampai memberikan komentar : "The Chinese have surrounded the basic MIPS design with their own subsystems, adding instructions in recent versions so that the chips can run software written for the x86 processors that Intel and AMD make for personal computers" Jadi processor tsb sudah sangat memadai untuk pekerjaan sehari-hari dan kerja kantoran, dan sudah tentu bisa untuk menjalankan widows dan kerabatnya.

Review dari MIT sudah cukup jelas : "The Chinese have surrounded the basic MIPS design with their own subsystems, adding instructions in recent versions so that the chips can run software written for the x86 processors that Intel and AMD make for personal computers" Apakah ada sumbernya yang mengatakan bahwa itu sekedar simulai ? Tapi tenang aja, saya memprediksi casenya akan mirip dengan BB wannabe made in China. Mulanya sangat-sangat disepelekan.

Kendati begitu, terjadi penurunan 11,1 persen ketimbang pencapaian Agustus 2010. Kemudian, perdagangan internasional China selama sembilan bulan pada 2010 sejak Januari mencapai nilai total 2,15 triliun dollar AS.

"China enggak mau alami kayak Jepang," tandasnya. |
