Timeline
Let’s be honest, following City can be a bit of a roller-coaster ride – read about all the highs, and the lows, of our glorious history.
1875 - 1902
1880 St Mark’s Church forms a football team which would later evolve into MCFC.
1884 The first known ‘City shirt’ is created – in black, with a Maltese-style cross. Some say this is because of the club’s strong links with Freemasonry in the 1880s, others believe the white cross proves the link with St Mark’s was still strong.
1887 St Mark’s team evolves into Ardwick AFC and moves to Hyde Road.
1889 An explosion at the nearby Hyde Road coal mine results in the death of 23 miners – Ardwick and Newton Heath play a friendly match under floodlights in aid of the disaster fund.
1892 The second division of the English Football League is created, with Ardwick AFC as founder members.
1894 Ardwick AFC reforms as Manchester City Football Club, in a bid to represent the whole city.
1889 City finish champions of Division Two, becoming the first team to gain automatic promotion.
1904 The Blues beat Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup final at Crystal Palace, becoming the first Manchester side to win a major trophy.
1914 to 1918 World War 1
League football is suspended from 1915-1919, though regional Subsidiary tournaments are still in place with City taking part in the Lancashire division.
1920s
1920 City’s Hyde Road ground becomes the first provincial football stadium to be visited by a reigning monarch.
1923 After Hyde Road is destroyed by fire, the club moves to the 85,000 capacity Maine Road.
1926 A topsy-turvy year for the Blues – manager-less City become first Manchester side to play at Wembley (FA Cup runners-up), record the highest Manchester derby victory (6-1 at Old Trafford) and suffer relegation in the same season.
1928 City promoted as Champions of Division Two – and are the Football League’s best-supported club.
1930s
1934 After losing the final last year, City beat Portsmouth 2-1 to lift the FA Cup.
1934 A record provincial crowd of 84,569 is recorded at Maine Road when the Blues entertain Stoke City.
1937 Manchester City win the League Championship for the first time.
1939 to 1945 World War 2
A Wartime League is set up with City playing in the Northern division. Substantial damage to Old Trafford means United are forced to play their home games at Maine Road. However City would never allow United usage of the home team changing room when the two teams met!
1945 to 1950
1947 City are promoted as Champions of Division Two.
1949 The MCFC Official Supporters Club is formed.
1950s
1955 City lose to Newcastle in the 1955 FA Cup Final at Wembley
1956 The Blues play their second successive FA Cup Final, this time beating Birmingham 3-1 to lift the trophy – their homecoming parade is the first outside transmission by Granada Television.
1958 The Munich AirDisaster devastates Manchester United’s first team squad and also kills several journalists including former City goalkeeper Frank Swift.
1960s
1965 A new club badge is developed in 1965, based around the central part of the City of Manchester coat of arms.
1966 City are promoted as champions of Division Two, under the management team of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison.
1968 The Blues defeat Newcastle United on the final day of the season to clinch the League Championship for the second time.
1969 Manchester City beat Leicester City 1-0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup.
1970s
1970 City complete a brilliant European and domestic cup double by winning the European Cup Winners Cup and the League Cup.
1972 The City badge is replaced with the red rose of Lancashire.
1974 City lose the League Cup final to Wovles.
1976 The Blues beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Wembley, with goals goals from Peter Barnes and a spectacular over-head kick from Dennis Tueart.
1979 The club break the transfer record, signing Steve Daley for £1,450,277. Within 2 years the Blues became the first side to sign three individual £1m+ players (Kevin Reeves & Trevor Francis were the other two).
1980s
1981 City reach the 100th FA Cup final against Spurs. Following a 1-1 draw on the Saturday, a replay was played again at Wembley, regarded as one of the most entertaining Cup finals ever. City were narrowly defeated 3-2 following a famous Ricky Villa goal but for City fans, Steve Mackenzie’s 30 yard volley was the better strike.
1986 City play in the inaugural Full Members’ Cup final at Wembley before a crowd of 68,000.
1987 A club record 10-1 demolition of Huddersfield Town is recorded at Maine Road in 1987.
1989 City are promoted in dramatic style in the last game of the season at Bradford. The highest-ever Maine Road derby win is recorded with City thumping neighbours United 5-1.
1990s
1992 The FA Premier League is formed, with City v QPR being the first ever live Monday night Sky game.
1994 City say farewell to the much loved Kippax Stand as legislation forces the closure of terracing at Premier League grounds. In its day the ‘Kippax’ was the largest standing area in the country.
1995/96 A dramatic season sees City appoint three different managers; Alan Ball, Steve Coppell and Frank Clark as well as significant spells as caretaker for Asa Hartford and Phil Neal.
1997 City unveil a new club badge. This new design features the Latin motto “Superbia in proelio” meaning ‘Pride in battle’.
1999 One of the most dramatic games ever played at Wembley sees City promoted after a penalty shoot-out against Gillingham in the Division Two Play-Off.
2000s
2000 City return to the Premiership following back-to-back promotions. A 4-1 victory over Blackburn at Ewood Park to seal promotion is followed by a celebratory pitch invasion by the Blues’ enormous travelling support.
2002 Future manager Stuart Pearce captains City as they are promoted back to the Premiership, breaking club records for the most goals scored and most points gained in a season along the way.
2003 It’s an emotional farewell to Maine Road as City’s home for 80 years stages its last football match, City vs. Southampton on Sunday 11th May. The club make the move to the impressive, 48,000 capacity, City of Manchester Stadium.
2007 Sven Goran Eriksson replaces Stuart Pearce as manager, and on 15th December City establish a 'top flight' club-record of nine straight home League wins at the start of the season.
2008 Former Wales, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester United star Mark Hughes becomes the new City Manager. The club break the British transfer record for the second time with the £32.5m signing of Robinho from Real Madrid.
2009 The Abu Dhabi United Group become the new owners of Manchester City. Roberto Mancini, former manager of Inter Milan replaces Mark Hughes in December.
2010 The Blues enjoy their best ever Premier League campaign, finishing 5th and qualifying for the Europa League in the process, as well as reaching the League Cup semi finals.

Financial Results Announ
Quote:
Manchester City today announces its financial results for the year ending 31st May 2009. This is the first period under the ownership of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The financial year to May 2009 marked the beginning of a period of significant planned investment in all areas of the Club; the playing squad, the youth academy, infrastructure, website and technology applications and our people.
Not surprisingly, this substantial investment has had a significant impact on this year's financial results. This investment is also forecast to similarly impact the financial results of the next several years as the Club seeks to achieve success both on and off the field.
Turnover for the year ended 31st May 2009 increased by 6% to £87.0m (2008:£82.3m), with this increase being offset by a significant increase in operating expenses to £121.2m (2008:£83.9m) primarily driven by increased playing staff costs.
This resulted in a Net Operating Loss of £34.2m (2008:£1.6m) and a Net Loss for the Year after amortisation of player contracts and financing charges of £92.6m (2008:£32.6m).
Match day attendances were up to 42,890 from an average of 42,081 in the previous season, with ticketing revenues ahead by £1.8m mainly as a result of the extended UEFA Cup run. TV Revenues were up 12% to £48.3m mainly as a result of UEFA cup performance, offset partially by a lower league placing than in the previous year.
Revenues from other commercial activities decreased by 8% to £23.3m mainly due to a £4.5m reduction in events revenues, primarily as a result of having no events based activities in the 08/09 season, whereas in the prior year the Stadium held the UEFA Cup Final as well as music concerts and a major boxing event.
This decrease was offset by significantly improved performances in the Club's core commercial areas of Retail and Partnerships.
Costs relating to amortisation of player contracts increased in the year, rising to £39.4m from £25.4m in the previous year and reflecting again the costs of building a new young playing squad. Interest payable and similar charges increased significantly as a result of the increased level of shareholder loans made to the business during the year.
Manchester City also confirmed today that subsequent to the end of the financial year, it has restructured its Balance Sheet with owner Sheikh Mansour converting all of his existing £304.9m shareholder loans made to the Club into equity. Sheikh Mansour has also purchased further shares to a value of £89.6m as a measure of his long term commitment to the Club.
Commenting on the financial performance and balance sheet restructure, Chief Financial and Administration Officer Graham Wallace said:
"The financial results reflect a period of rapid change at the Club, the result of long-term planning and investment by the Board and our owners, to create a sustainable business in the future. We have always said that this transformation will take a number of years and these figures reflect that.
“The owners' decision to convert debt to equity is in line with their previously-stated financial strategy and is fantastic news for supporters of Manchester City, whose Club is now on a secure financial foundation that gives a tremendous platform to build from in future years."

Jerome Boateng has agreed the terms of a five-year contract to join Manchester City from German Bundesliga side Hamburg SV.
The German international defender will formally become a City player from July 1st. As this date could still coincide with his World Cup duty with Germany, Boateng conducted a whistlestop tour of Carrington and City of Manchester Stadium in order to finalise the details of his move ahead of the big kick-off in South Africa.
Boateng is a versatile defender who can play at either centre-half or full-back. The 21-year-old is highly rated in Germany, having played 75 times for Hamburg and three times for the German national side.
City boss Roberto Mancini is an admirer of the 6ft 3ins defender, and was delighted to secure his first signing of the summer.
Mancini said: “This is a very good signing for Manchester City and I am pleased to bring Jerome to the Club. He is a young player who is already of a very high quality, but I think he can continue to improve at City.
“It’s good for Jerome to have agreed terms ahead of the World Cup, so he can now concentrate on playing for Germany. And I will be very interested to see how he gets on in the tournament, before welcoming him back to meet his team-mates in pre-season."
Boateng, who is the younger brother of Portsmouth midfielder Kevin-Prince, becomes the third City signing from Hamburg in recent years, following the 2008 recruitment of Belgian utility man Vincent Kompany and 2009 signing of Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong.
Family Reunion
Spoiler
Manchester City have secured the signing of Yaya Toure on a five-year deal from Barcelona.
The Ivory Coast international midfielder returned from World Cup duty on Monday following the African side’s exit from the tournament.
Toure has completed a medical with City physios in Spain and also finalised the details of his switch from the Spanish Champions.
The 27-year-old is one of the World’s most coveted midfield players. Signed in the summer of 2007, Toure has since enjoyed a decorated three-year spell at the Nou Camp. He picked up a Champions League winner’s medal in 2009, when he played in the 1-0 final victory over Manchester United. He was also a regular in Barca’s 2008/09 and 2009/10 La Liga title winning sides.
Coming off the back of Wednesday’s announcement of the signing of Valencia forward David Silva, manager Roberto Mancini was delighted to also secure the services of Toure. He said: “This is another fantastic signing for Manchester City, and I am very pleased Yaya has joined us, he is a very good player.
“Everyone knows Yaya is a player that we have admired for a long time, and we would like to welcome him to Manchester City. He has played at the top level with Barcelona and I am sure he his experience and ability will be very important for us.”
He will now enjoy a three-week holiday following Ivory Coast’s exit from the World Cup, before joining up with his new team-mates, including elder brother Kolo, for the forthcoming tour to the United States of America.
Our Brain On The Pitch
Spoiler
City’s new attacking midfielder David Silva will fly into Manchester next week to begin life with the Blues.
The Spanish World Cup winner has been recharging his batteries back home in Gran Canaria and is likely to make his home debut against his former club Valencia a week on Saturday.
“It will be a nice start, won’t it?” he smiled. “I enjoyed my time with Valencia so it’s great that my old club could also be my first home game."
Silva signed for the Blues just after the World Cup final having agreed to come to City back in June. He isn’t worried that he is moving to somewhat less sunny climes, either.
“I know that the weather in Manchester is different than Valencia or the Canaries,” he smiled. “But I’m coming to Manchester to play football in a great team, not for sunbathing or going to the beach!”
Silva is particularly looking forward to playing in front of the City fans this season and is hoping to continue his perfect scoring record in England, having scored against both the Blues and Chelsea on his only two previous visits as a player.
"I'm here to create and score goals - hopefully, I can do both," he said.
"I’ve heard that City supporters are loyal, passionate and very brave. They shout and sing all the time and they have always supported the team, even through difficult times.
“I am eager to experience that from inside the stadium and I’m excited by the challenge ahead for the team.”
From Serbia With Love
Spoiler
New City signing Aleksandar Kolarov took a wide-eyed tour of Carrington then revealed the vision he shares for the future with manager Roberto Mancini.
Serbia's World Cup left-back waved goodbye to Lazio and Serie A to challenge himself on a five-year deal with the Blues in the competition he calls "the best League in the world."
He completed the details - and a guided tour of City's training complex - before jetting back to Belgrade for the weekend to prepare for his Premier League adventure.
Kolarov declared: "I'm very excited to be here at a great club like Manchester City. Even the training ground is fantastic, better than Lazio's.
"I'm coming back early next week to train with the players who aren't touring America. I want to start as soon as I can, and I can't wait to meet all the other guys.
"I had the opportunity to join other teams - the names are not important. When I spoke with Mr Mancini, my choice was Manchester City because I know they are a good team. I think maybe a great team.
"The Premier League is the best in the world and he wants us to go further and win the Premier title and the Champions League. For a young player like me, this is the best opportunity. It's the dream."
Our Goal Getter
Spoiler
Manchester City is delighted to announce that the signing of Mario Balotelli from Inter Milan has been completed for an undisclosed fee.
The striker, who celebrated his 20th birthday on Thursday, completed his medical this lunchtime before putting pen to paper on his five-year contract at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Last But Not Least
Spoiler
James Milner is eyeing a place at the heart of City's midfield as he prepares to chase his dream of a Premier League winner's medal following his move from Aston Villa.
Manager Roberto Mancini pinpointed the England player's versatility as a key factor in his pursuit of Milner following the summer arrivals of Jerome Boateng, Yaya Toure, Aleksandar Kolarov, David Silva and Mario Bolatelli.
But 24-year-old James is warning his former Villa team-mate Gareth Barry and City's other top linkmen that he aims to play a central role when his Blues career kicks off against visitors Liverpool on Monday night.
Milner, who switched from the flank to the middle with notable success at Villa, said: "Wherever the manager wants me to play, I'll do it to the best of my ability.
"But I enjoy playing in the middle - that's probably my best position and where I've shown by best form over the past 18 months. I've been most creative and scored goals from there and I've enjoyed it immensely.
"I think that's where the boss has signed me to play, but if he asks me to play anywhere else I'll do what is best for the team.
Not that he is taking a starting place for granted: "You need competition at any successful club, because if players are comfortable whether they play well or not then performances are going to slip.
"You need players pushing each other every day to step out on that pitch, and if you know you are going to be replaced if you don't perform, then that's healthy for the team."
James, who links up with another former Villa pal in goalkeeper Stuart Taylor, received a rousing weekend farewell from Villa fans and expects Stephen Ireland, whose No.7 shirt he inherits, to go down a storm there.
