Rail workers of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath (3 miles northeast of Manchester city center) formed a football club in 1878. The club called itself Newton Heath L&YR FC, and played in green and yellow halved jerseys (the colors of the railway). For their first 15 years, they played on a small, run-down field near the future site of the Manchester Piccadilly railway station. Their nickname was the Heathens ..................
Matt Busby’s playing career was spent at Manchester City (226 appearances), and Liverpool (118 appearances), from 1928-40. He enlisted in the King’s Liverpool Regiment during WW II, and was an Army instructor at Sandhurst Military Academy when Manchester United informed him of their managerial vacancy. League play resumed in the late summer of 1946, and fans, hungry for entertainment after the War, flocked to the stadia. Due to the extensive damage the Luftwaffe had visited upon Old Trafford, United had to play their matches at Maine Road for three seasons..................
In 1958-59, the first season after the Munich Air Disaster, Manchester United produced a surprise finish of second place, with Bobby Charlton scoring 29 goals, and the team netting 103. Huge crowds showed up at Old Trafford, in the wake of the tragedy, and the team must have fed off the moral support. The following season (1959-’60), Dennis Viollet scored a team record 32 goals, and the club finished in 7th place. A new addition the next season was a hard-tackling full-back named Norbert “Nobby” Stiles, a local product. The club had another 7th place finish in 1961, but United plummeted to 15th place in 1962. That summer, the club signed Scottish forward Denis Law from the Italian club, Torino, for a then-record 115,000 pounds.....................
Alex Ferguson’s first few seasons as manager of Manchester United were not successful, and he was on the verge of being sacked in early 1990. But a good Cup run kept him from getting the hook. United went on to win the 1990 FA Cup, over Crystal Palace, in the replay, with Lee Martin scoring the lone goal. During this period, their goals came primarily from Brian McClair, who was the first player since George Best to score 20 goals in a season for the club (McClair netted 24 in the League in ‘88)........................

Why we dont refer to our Awesome Club as Ma*U ... Ma*U is not a term United fans refer to themselves as. The term is only used by other supporters as a complete and utter insult to our club. The "u" is meant to be "you" by the rival fans.
An early example of its usage is this chant by West Brom fans : "Duncan Edwards is manure, rotting in his grave, man you are manure - rotting in your grave". The origin of "Ma*U" is a song to insult the dead Duncan Edwards. Liverpool and Leeds fans copied this with their own man you /u versions to insult all of the lads who died at munich.
"Ma*U Ma*U went on a plane Ma*U Ma*U never came back again" and .......
"Ma*UNever Intended Coming Home" (if you combine the first letter of each word you get the word MUNICH)
I hope this makes it clearer that saying Ma*U is an insult, particularly to the older supporters and to see United fans using it now is shameful. I hope a few might read this, understand and spread the word. So... Please REFRAIN from using this term ever again!!!!!!!

Theatre of Dreams 2009-2010 adalah Thread ke 4 yang membahas tentang Manchester United, yang kepengen bernostalgia kemasa lalu.. Silahken ikutin Link dibawah :
The Community Shield was prised from United’s grasp in an enthralling clash at Wembley, a game that required a penalty shoot-out to separate two evenly-matched sides. Despite this defeat, 4-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time, the Reds' performance provides plenty of promise for the season ahead.
Nani had given United the lead with a long-range effort after just ten minutes, then Ricardo Carvalho equalised shortly after half-time. But in a competition that used to be called the Charity Shield, there was little charity in Chelsea’s second. As Patrice Evra lay prostrate on the ground after a bad Michael Ballack challenge, referee Chris Foy neglected to stop play and Frank Lampard scored what everyone thought was the winner. That was until substitute Ryan Giggs picked out Wayne Rooney’s run, and the Reds forward expertly finished to send the tie to the lottery of spot-kicks.
Second half goals from Wayne Rooney and Tom Cleverley gave United victory in an entertaining friendly against Valencia.
Deubtant Antonio Valencia played a major role in both goals as United's wingplay overpowered the visitors, who enjoyed their own opportunities in an open game littered with chances.
Michael Owen, also making his Old Trafford bow as a United player, was desperately unfortunate not to find himself on the scoresheet, as he passed up a pair of chances in each half.
While the finishing was off-key, there was much to admire in Owen's movement and, crucially, his link-up with England team-mate Rooney.
AUDI CUP 2009 BOCA JUNIORS - MANCHESTER UNITED - BAYERN MUNCHEN - AC MILAN
United were beaten in the inaugural Audi Cup final, as tournament hosts Bayern Munich took the trophy after an epic penalty shootout in the Allianz Arena.
Penalties were the only way to decide a winner after a cagey 90 minutes in which each side forced only a couple of decent chances. Reds defender Jonny Evans saw his penalty saved in sudden death, allowing Daniel van Buyten to hammer home the winning kick.
TUR ASIA MANCHESTER UNITED 2009 CHINA - KOREA - INDONESIA - MALAYSIA
United made it three wins out of three in the toughest test of the Asia Tour so far, beating FC Seoul 3-2 with goals from Wayne Rooney, Federico Macheda and Dimitar Berbatov, while Ji-sung Park was warmly received on his homecoming.
Another United player looking to make his mark was Federico Macheda, handed his second consecutive start on this Asia Tour, which suggests the 17-year-old may feature prominently this season. Indeed, pre-match, Sir Alex described him as a “hero in the making”. And Macheda was the creator of United’s first real opening. Charging down the left channel, he cut inside and squared his pass to Ryan Giggs, but the Welshman miscalculated his volley and swung an air-shot with his right boot.
At the other end Tomasz Kuszczak needed to be alert to deal with a few early attempts on goal from the home side, efforts which he dealt with admirably.
United saved their best performance until the last leg of the Asia Tour, winning an entertaining game 8-2 against Hangzhou Greentown in China.
Ryan Giggs grabbed a second-half hat-trick and was joined on the scoresheet by Michael Owen (2), Nani, Zoran Tosic and arguably the man of the match, Dimitar Berbatov.
In truth, it probably wasn’t the most useful pre-season test but Sir Alex Ferguson will still take plenty of encouragement into the more arduous Audi Cup fixtures against Boca Juniors and either AC Milan or Bayern Munich. Apart from the obvious glut of goals, he will reflect positively on the creative play of Berbatov and Nani who tore the opposition apart.

Reason: fixture & results
Forget the result. It was irrelevant. Last night was about Manchester United and David Beckham.
It was about a famous old club and the return of one of its favourite sons.
It was about a man who is still hero-worshipped by the supporters of a team he left nearly seven years ago.
A man met not by the V-signs and faces contorted with hate that is the usual greeting for players going back to their old stomping grounds in English football.
A man greeted instead with standing ovations and cheers and chants asking United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to bring Beckham back for a career swansong.
And it was about Beckham’s first, and probably his last, chance to say goodbye to Old Trafford and to thank United’s supporters.
Beckham knew how to do that. There is a great populist behind his quiet exterior. He has always had an instinct for that kind of thing and it didn’t let him down last night.
So when the final whistle had blown, he grasped straight away that there was one thing he could do that would mean more than anything else.
As he walked towards the tunnel, gulping back the emotion welling up inside him as the crowd stood to acclaim him, Beckham bent in front of the Stretford End, the emotional heart of the club, and picked something off the turf.
It was a scarf, a green and gold scarf, the symbol of peaceful protest that has been adopted so successfully by fans opposed to the Glazer regime that runs the club.
And just before he disappeared down the Old Trafford tunnel for the last time, he wrapped the scarf around his neck. The fans let out a mighty cheer and then Beckham was gone.
Only Beckham could conjure a dramatic exit like that at the end of a game where Milan had been embarrassed by a brilliant United team led by Wayne Rooney.
But who cared by then that Milan had been beaten 4-0 on the night and 7-2 on aggregate? The occasion wasn’t about that. It was obvious from what happened at the San Siro three weeks ago that United were a cut above their opponents anyway.
The tie was over as a contest by the time United flew out of Milan clasping a 3-2 lead. All that was left was the return of the world’s most famous footballer to the place where it all began.
The night didn’t start the way Beckham would have intended it to. Milan coach Leonardo left him on the bench, preferring former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini.
So to begin with, Beckham had to make do with renewing old acquaintances. He wrapped former United manager Wilf McGuinness in a hug as he warmed up before the start and waved to mum, Sandra, and sister, Joanne, as they stood watching proudly from the directors’ box.
Still, a place in the dug-out, watching his old friends Gary Neville and Paul Scholes helping United to extend their lead in the tie, would not have been what Beckham envisaged when this second round tie was first announced.
He may also have been marginally surprised to read Ferguson’s notes in last night’s match programme.
He knows what his former manager is like of course - he described him as ’a scary man’ when he landed here on Tuesday - but Ferguson’s lack of grace about Beckham’s return has been striking.
Ferguson wrote about 800 words in his notes and did not mention Beckham once. No welcome back. Nothing. It sometimes seems as if the United boss wants to turn Beckham into a non-person.
All Beckham could do was sit and wait, desperately hoping for a chance to come on and change the game as it slipped further and further away from Milan.
Old Trafford waited, too. With increasing impatience. Once it had become clear that Milan posed no danger to United’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals, seeing Beckham treading the Old Trafford turf again became the crowd’s primary objective.
After Rooney had put United 2-0 up on the night early in the second half, Beckham began to warm up and the crowd begged Leonardo to bring him on. “We want Beckham,” they sang. “We want Beckham.”
Beckham finally got the signal from Leonardo in the 64th minute and when he came on for right back Ignazio Abate, he was met with a huge cheer and a prolonged standing ovation from the entire ground.
But Ji-Sung Park had put United 3-0 up by then, Milan were 6-2 down on aggregate and the tie was dead. Reviving Milan’s hopes was beyond even a man with Beckham’s unrivalled talent for rescuing what seems like lost causes.
He did hit one superb volley 15 minutes from the end, a brilliant effort that stung Edwin Van Der Sar’s hands as he pushed it over the bar.
And Milan looked like a far better side with him on the pitch. He managed one last deliciously curling cross in front of the old Scoreboard End where he got the equaliser against Spurs that helped clinch the league for United in the Treble season. Filippo Inzaghi only needed to get a firm touch on it to score but he could not provide it.
Soon after Beckham came on, Ferguson withdrew Neville, Rooney and Scholes. Neville seemed briefly as if he was going to shake his old friend’s hand as he jogged off but he swerved away at the last second. Both men laughed.
All that was left was the nostalgia. At first the crowd booed Beckham when he got the ball, knowing that he was in on the joke. It was pantomime stuff.
But every time Beckham took a corner, the crowd rose to its feet as one to acclaim him.
The night was a triumph for his qualities as a man and for the loyalty he showed to United both while he was here and since he has left.
It was still Beckham’s night. His old team spoiled it a little bit but a part of Beckham, the part that picked up that green and gold scarf and put it round his neck, will be happy even about that.
